2026 Municipal Election Information

Make Your Voice Count on Election Day

On Monday, October 26, 2026, Burlington residents will head to the polls to elect their local municipal representatives. This election is an important opportunity to help shape the future of our city and ensure your voice is heard on the issues that matter most to our community.

What Positions Are Being Elected?

Voters in Burlington will elect:

  • The Mayor of Burlington
  • Their City & Regional Councillor
  • A School Board Trustee based on their school support designation:
    • Public School Board Trustee
    • Catholic School Board Trustee
    • Francophone Public School Board Trustee
    • Francophone Catholic School Board Trustee

The position of Regional Chair will not appear on the ballot in 2026, as the Province of Ontario has changed the role from an elected position to an appointed one.

Burlington is divided into six wards, with one City & Regional Councillor elected to represent each ward. School Board Trustee positions are also elected based on designated geographic areas and school board representation.

What Does a City & Regional Councillor Do?

Your City & Regional Councillor helps make decisions that affect everyday life in Burlington and throughout Halton Region. These responsibilities include:

  • Parks, recreation, libraries, arts and culture
  • Public transit and transportation planning
  • Local roads, sidewalks, traffic management and road safety
  • Fire protection, policing, public health and emergency services
  • Waste collection, recycling and environmental services
  • Development, planning, building permits and by-law enforcement
  • Housing initiatives, childcare programs and community services
  • Long-term infrastructure planning and growth management

Councillors are also responsible for overseeing significant municipal budgets, including Burlington’s operating budget and Halton Region’s operating budget, helping ensure taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly and effectively.

How Do I Vote?

The City of Burlington will provide official information regarding voter eligibility, registration, voting locations, accessibility services and voting methods through its municipal election resources.

Residents are encouraged to confirm their voter registration information well in advance of Election Day. If you have recently moved, changed your name, or are new to Burlington, be sure your information is up to date.
